About Liberty University

Liberty University, or LU for short, is a private Christian university located in Lynchburg, also known as the `City of Seven Hills`, `The Hill City` and sometimes described as `A City Unto Itself`, which is an independent city in the Commonwealth of the US state of Virginia, with a population estimated at a number of more than 73 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census. In addition to Liberty University, Lynchburg is also home to Central Virginia Community College, Lynchburg College, Randolph College, and Virginia University of Lynchburg.

Liberty University was founded as Lynchburg Baptist College, in 1971, by Jerry Falwell, the Senior Pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church. The institution's name was changed to Liberty Baptist College in 1976, before adopting its current name in 1984, when it obtained university status. Today, Liberty University is the largest Evangelical Christian university in the world, and it offers its students, which number approximately 60 000, 71 majors and specializations, in areas such as Aeronautics, Philosophy and Religion, English, Business, Criminal Justice, Education and Nursing, its Distance Learning Program also offering 36 degree programs.

According to U.S. News & World Report, Liberty University is a Fourth Tier institution in the Universities Masters (South) category, next to Southern Wesleyan University, Bethel College, and Norfolk State University, the School of Law and School of Business being among the most highly ranked academic divisions at LU.

Athletics

LU's athletic teams are known as the Liberty Flames, who compete in NCAA Division I-AA in football and NCAA NCAA Division I, in the Big South Conference in various other sports, for both men and women. The Liberty Flames have experienced victory in many of their sports, among their most notable achievements being the fact that their brought home the Sasser Cup six times, including the inaugural Big South Conference Quiz Bowl competition in 2006, and again in 2007.
